Who Are VPAT?
Velma’s Pets As Therapy visiting program is a self-funded, registered charity mainly made up of volunteers who take specifically trained friendly pets to hospitals and other health care facilities; to visit frail and challenged adults and children, to offer mental, physical, emotional and social stimulation.
Where Does VPAT Visit?
Visit children and adults in hospitals, nursing homes, retirement villages, day care centers, and challenged individuals in private homes.
What Training Does VPAT People and Pet Visitors Receive?
All pets are assessed by a veterinarian for healthiness, a sound temperament and basic obedience specific to “safe” pets as therapy. The two-legged volunteers take a correspondence course based on safe interaction with frail adults and children, with a pet.
The course includes a foundation in the various illnesses and conditions challenged people experience and how best to communicate with them.
After the course, the volunteers are supervised on visits by trainers until they have reached an efficient and professional standard. When fully trained receive a course completion certificate.
VPAT’s highly trained volunteers and pets go anywhere, where a challenged or frail pet-loving adult or child is living, without a pet, to offer physical, mental, emotional and social stimulation plus cuddles and kisses from a friendly pet.
